Is Your Sat-Nav System Breaking the Law?

Many of us use satellite navigation systems and safety camera detection systems that are fixed to the front screens of our vehicles.

Well did you know we could all be breaking the law by doing this?

The existence of a 21 year old law which forms part of the “Road Vehicles Construction and Use Act” states that “vehicles must provide a clear view of the road ahead”

Clearly, with some devices on our screens and usually in our line of vision, it could be argued that we don’t have a clear view of the road.

The legislation says the swept area of the windscreen must be kept clear and indeed the latest version of the Highway Code, also makes mention of new technology, pointing out that there might be a danger of a driver being distracted as a result of having equipment such as in car sat-nav systems.

The ‘lets stop everything brigade’ are warning of accidents being directly caused and children being knocked over and injured all because we cant see ahead due to the placement of the sat-nav systems on our screens.

Fact is, everything we now do seems to be regulated ‘for our own good’ and whilst yes, in an ideal world we see the point, to moan and groan about this is just ridiculous for if drivers are sensible about where we put our sat-nav systems on our screens, there really shouldn’t be a problem.

Better however that you now know the law exists and that you can arrive at your own decision as to what action you feel appropriate.

Clearly, if as an employer, you are providing your drivers with such systems, you don’t want to get yourself involved in a legal battle in the event of the driver claiming its placement obstructed his view and caused an accident.

Maybe it’s just worth you looking at what happens with your drivers now and making your mind up as to your policy on this one.
